Do you think I am a Vase?

2020

Medium: Ceramic, bell, hemp rope, cotton thread, soil saver mesh blanket

Description

The crisp clash of bells oftentimes signifies a happy mood. However, when the bells collide with each other and break, the sound of the collision is no longer a symphony. In China, young and beautiful women are often objectified as “vases.” When domestic violence occurs, the “vase” is often the primary victim. The law’s complicity in domestic violence and the legal ethics restrictions on women have made their living conditions like walking on thin ice. The clusters of bells above the head are inspired by Tibetan jewelry; this commemorates a true event where Tibetan mother was burned by gasoline all over her body during domestic violence and eventually died.
