Performance

During three years of mentally and physically experiencing the pandemic in China and the United States, the artist has felt constantly trapped by political depression. The increasingly precarious social situation of Chinese women in both countries seems to be the last straw crushing her already fragile spiritual world.

In this performance, she entwines an exploration of nationalism under a vast propaganda system and feminism as a single individual in the perpetual pandemic era; an attempt to gain spiritual relief through self-healing.

An’s works often use metaphors to simulate a specific political and cultural context through interaction with the audience. Here, a red balloon is performed as a dual carrier of meanings twisting between oppression and female liberation, between the State and the individual.
